Fantastic captures about African living, check it out at the Berlin based Gallery Kuckei+Kuckei..

Nontsikelelo »Lolo« Veleko was born in Bodibe, North West Province in 1977, and grew up in Cape Town. Today she lives and works in Johannesburg. She started her studies at the Cape Technikon, and later continued to study photography at the Market Theatre Photo Workshop in Johannesburg.
Already during her studies Veleko‘s works were presented in Southafrica as well as in several international exhibitions and publications. Lolo has been nominated for many awards and grants. Recently she has won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award 2008.
The exhibition »A Look Away« at Kuckei + Kuckei presents portraits of South African young people from the series »Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder I« and »Wonderland«.
In her vivid and powerful pictures, Lolo Veleko provides an insight into South Africa’s urban life. Even more through her precise observations, she shows the meaning of fashion in the search for one’s own identity. At the same time, a second question concerns the perception of beauty and identity, perception that is in the eye of the beholder – as suggested by the title itself.

Just a small article on the history of one of my favourite brands of all time: Stussy. These guys made streetwear fashionable and were the pioneers of urban fashion. Below the picture you’ll find a small excerpt from their website, which basically tells the whole story. Enjoy.

„In 1980, Shawn Stussy was a local cult surfboard shaper who took his scrawled signature logo from his foam masterpieces and applied it to tee shirts that he sold along with his boards around Laguna Beach, California.
As the clothing line expanded, it’s raw and modern aesthetic soon developed into the next generation of new wave beach culture. We grew during a time when epochal shifts which eternally framed contemporary popular culture were taking place.
In the music scene, the late 70’s gave us punk. Then the early 80’s brought us into the new DIY music called rap. Punk broke creative and aesthetic barriers and taught us that anyone could have a band. Rap then preceded not only to push social boundaries but as well explore the ideas of remixing and sampling. These new ideas and territories created a new modern platform for fashion and cultural expression.
With Stussy’s success came the opportunity to travel and spread the Stussy vibe. We hooked up with trendsetters in New York, London, Tokyo and other areas of the world. Stussy clothing was inspired by this international group of musicians, skaters, DJs and artists with similar tastes, which helped to shape the brand into an international streetwear label.
Today, Stussy exists as a brand with worldwide respect and independence. With over sixty stores across the globe and a very strong tribe still in effect, Stussy is a leader in the culture which we helped start over 25 years ago.
Peace,
The Stussy Crew“

Heinz Strunk: Die Zunge Europas. Roman, Rowohlt, Reinbek 2008, 317 Seiten, 19,90 €

It has never been a secret that most artists in the US support the Democrats, but this year it is probably more urgent than ever. Terry Richardson’s latest pic with Barack Obama is just one of many encouraging examples. Take a look at his website terryrichardson.com

Another one of those former street photographers, who made it by just documenting pieces of his life seen through a lens. I recognized him, when I bought a Stussy shirt from the collection „Josh Cheuse x Stussy“, just basic white tees with impressive captures on it. The funny thing was, he wrote a small story for every shirt, wich was printed upside down on the inside of the shirt. check his site joshcheuse.com.
